Overview
Dazu Grottoes, 163km from Chongqing, refers to 75 cliff carving sites in Dazu County with over 50,000 statues and 100,000 character inscriptions. Beginning in 650 AD (Tang Dynasty) and continuing through the Qing Dynasty, this UNESCO World Heritage site (1999) ranks alongside Dunhuang frescoes and forms a trilogy with Yungang and Longmen Grottoes. The main sites are North Hill (Beishan) and Baoding Hill (Baodingshan).
